« Just like the Womb... :: Changing Criteria.. »Parents and Educators!!! There truly is nothing like the First Day of School.
The First Day of school is such an important part of the school year, that parents everywhere go above and beyond the call of duty to insure that this one day is as close to perfection as can possible. Carefully, everything is laid out, organized, reviewed, and rehearsed almost like the night before the wedding, maybe prom or the first game of the season.
Follow up:
I asked myself, "Why am I driving to every Walgreens between Highway 6, 529, 290 and 249 looking for locker kits on a Sunday night when I am physically spent?" "Why am I running around taking orders and direction from a 7th grader, when I could be home resting and taking care of important business?" Well, it's simple! A great start is a key to a great finish.
Seeing all the parents packed in the stores Sunday night, picking up one to two items, showed me that parents everywhere had come to the same revelation that I had. I wondered to myself as parent and child raced up and down the aisles, how many parents and children had prepared themselves educationally with the same fever? How many spent the summer, insuring that their students were prepared for the academic challenges as well as the social challenges and acceptance desired?
Sadly, I figured the number would be few. As I talked to peers, I mentally counted the many dollars that were spent on awesome summer programs, and stylish clothing, vacations and general entertainment, and compared it to the budget set aside for educational tools and building and wondered: "What if we prepared our students for the first day of school educationally like we prepare them for the first day of school socially?"
I suspect if we were to offer the preparation educationally like we do socially, that the finish to the school year would be reflective of the start. Next year, it is my hope that both parents and educators will begin preparing their students long before the first day of school. Let's face it; preparing Sunday night will not cut it.
