Start Digging

Feb 08 | Start Digging

Last week a thought was recorded on FaceBook by fellow V.U.U. alumni Saquan Jones. He wrote, "Very rarely do we find our treasure without digging for it. If you let what you see on the surface guide your path with love, you may miss out on the love of your life."

When I read this thought, I was taken back. This statement is true on so many levels. Although it is the week leading up to Valentines Day (men, we have 6 days!!!), I want to look at this in reference to the students we have in our home.

Follow up:

Saquan wrote, "Very rarely do we find treasure without digging for it." Yes my friends, you guessed it. There truly is a treasure that lies within all of us, particularly the students we have in our homes. A treasure that is available, but simply just not accessed. I wondered to myself, how many of us are digging for that treasure? Are we just satisfied with polishing and dressing up the outside? Are we pushing our kids to achieve their full potential? Honestly, I wonder if many of us are allowing our students to settle for mediocrity, because we don’t want the strain of holding them accountable for their full potential. Are we digging for that treasure, or just assuming that it will unearth itself?

I want to challenge all parents to get a shovel and start digging. Let’s not wait for the treasure! Let’s grab metal detectors, and map and use every available tool to unearth that which is hidden and waiting to be discovered. Warning, digging can be painful and will require time and resources, along with the faith and confidence that there is something there that will is more valuable than what is spent to find the treasure within. The question we must ask is, “Is the value of what lay beneath the surface worth the resources that we must pour into this excavation?” I am convinced that the treasure within is well worth the resources required to unearth them. Do you?
