Apr 06 | April is Autism Awareness Month

Autism is a complex developmental disability that affects individuals to varying degrees, from very mildly to severely.  Autism is the most common condition in the austism spectrum disorder (ASD) group which is also referred to as pervasive developmental disorder (PDD).   Children with autism have difficulties communicating and intereacting with others.  Children exhibit different ways of learning, focusing and reacting.

Autism typically appears in the first three years of life and early signs of autism in children include:

  • lack of or delay in spoken language
  • repetition of language or actions
  • little or no eye contact
  • persistent fixation on parts of objects
  • little interest in interaction with other children
  • no interest in "pretend" play
  • aversion to being held or cuddled

There is no cure for autism, but early diagnosis and intervention can significantly improve the outcome! Creative Tutors has worked with several children with ASD and has been very successful in improving their educational journey.

Mar 02 | STAAR to replace TAKS

In past years Texas' standardized tests have been called TABS, TEAMS,  TAAS and TAKS! The next generation of tests for Texas students will be called the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness or STAAR.  STAAR replaces what is currently referred to as TAKS, the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills.  STAAR will be used for the 12 end of course assessments and the new grade 3-8 assessments.  The new tests will be used beginning next year, 2011-2012 school year.  Students who are currently in the seventh grade will be the first students who must meet the end-of-course testing requirements, as well as pass their classes, to receive a diploma.  The new tests will be more rigorous than previous tests and will measure your child's performance, as well as academic growth.  Whatever the name of the test, Creative Tutors can help with test prep for the reading, math, science, social studies or exit level exams.

Meet Jan Coltrain-Sapp | Owner

Jan Coltrain-Sapp is the owner of the Creative Tutors Plano. The role is a natural for her since she has always had a passion for education...both from a teaching and from a learning perspective. A Creative Tutors customer before she became an owner, Coltrain-Sapp calls Creative Tutors her "life preserver." When her daughter began having educational and learning difficulties at the age of three, Coltrain-Sapp became very active in her education. Through finding solutions for her daughter, she gained experience with the educational system and the law. She also developed heightened awareness of children's educational needs. Her experience as a working parent gives her particular sensitivity to other parents who work and want the best education for their child.

Coltrain-Sapp graduated with honors from the University of Northern Iowa with a business education major and taught at the community college level. Subsequently, she pursued an MBA in HR and Personnel Management at Northeast Missouri University and received her law degree from the University of Iowa.
