Feb 26 | Unlocking the Mysteries of Test Taking

Taking a test can be terrifying for a student. Here are some tips to help ease the fears of test takers.

  • If you are asked to "explain" or "describe" something on an exam, be sure to use complete sentences, not notes or key words. Be sure to express your thoughts in a clear and organized manner to best show your understanding of the material.
  • Read through the entire test first. This sounds simple enough, however, this is often something that test takers fail to do. Reading through the entire test allows the test taker to see how long the exam is and to highlight any special instructions.
  • Be sure to answer questions completely. Test takers often lose points on a question simply because they only answered part of the question. These are points that are easily earned by simply reading through the entire question.
  • Keep a timetable. Test creators expect each question on a test to take a specific amount of time to be answered. If you have looked through the entire exam before beginning, you know how many questions are on the exam, you also know how long you have to complete the exam. By dividing the number of questions by the time allowed to finish the exam, you can determine how long you should spend on each question. If you are working on a question and have exceeded the allotted time for the question, mark it and move on. Chances are good that there will be other questions that you will answer quickly which will give you time to come back to the questions you have marked.
