·    Cupid (symbol for Roman God of love), doves, love birds, roses, hearts and arrows are all symbols of the Valentine's Day celebration.
·    Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day around 498 A.D.
·    In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be celebrated around seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes.

·    In Medieval times, girls ate bizarre foods on St Valentine's Day to dream of their future spouse.
·    There was a belief in the Middle Ages that the first unmarried person (of the opposite sex) you met on the morning of St. Valentine's Day would become your spouse.
·    73% of Valentine Day flowers are bought by men, whereas women buy only 23% of Valentine flowers.
·    Around 3% of pet owners prefer to give Valentine gifts to their pets, as they are more grateful than humans.
·    The heart is the most common symbol of romantic love. Ancient cultures believed the human soul lived in the heart and its red color is thought to be the most romantic.
·    The red rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Since red stands for strong feelings, red rose is a flower of love.
·    The first Valentine's Day box of chocolates was introduced by Richard Cadbury in 1868.
·    In Wales, wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on Valentine's Day. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favorite Valentine decorations on the wooden spoons that meant, "You unlock my heart!"

Kim Ashby | Owner

Meet Kim Ashby | Owner

Kim Ashby earned a BS in Nursing from The Catholic University of America and, when she worked outside the home, was a Certified Emergency Nurse with a special interest in trauma nursing. She lives in Raleigh, NC with her husband and three sons. The Ashbys have home schooled their children since 1999. They graduated their oldest son in May 2007. He is attending UNC Wilmington. Kim continues to home school her younger boys. Her oldest son was diagnosed with ADHD when he was in the public school system in the second grade. Her second son has cerebral palsy which has resulted in multiple/global developmental delays. Her youngest son has undiagnosed, mild auditory processing issues.

Kim has co-instructed graduate level courses at UNC Chapel Hill for ST/OT students and Early Intervention students. She is the founder and President of the Board of Directors of GIFTSNC, Inc., a home schooling special needs support group. Kim has presented workshops at a variety of state home school conferences as well as local support group parent meetings and is often a guest speaker at homeschool conferences and is found on many guest speaker lists including Balancing the Sword. She is a Steering Committee member and former Treasurer for Dayspring Home Educators in Cary, NC. She served on the Board of Directors for the Family Support Network of Wake County. She holds a North Carolina Wildlife Permit for Small Mammal Rehabilitation and enjoys working with orphaned and injured wildlife.
