The SAT is an aptitude test, though many feel it is inadequate to measure a student's aptitude for college as there are so many variables affecting a student's successful college experience. Nevertheless, almost all colleges require some form of testing before admission to the school and typically admission to a school is based predominantly on your SAT scores and GPA (grade point average.)
The "new" SAT takes 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete. It covers Reading, Writing, Math and a 25 minutes Experimental section. The Experimental section which is 25 minutes long does not count toward your score. The 3 sections of the test - reading, writing and math - each receive their own score. Scores range between 200-800 points with a total test score ranging between 600-2400. The average test score is 500 with an average total test score of 1500.
You must pre-register for the SAT. You can either register at your high school or go to the College Board Website and prepay/register from their site.

Specifically answering your question about score improvement for SAT we find it best to teach the student the content that they have forgotten or missed in prior years to improve the overall score. Many times, this will result in hundred's of points higher on the overall score...when a student has a very low score ...most of the time the student has forgotten the content. A student also will learn how to best manage taking the test and the time management for the overall test period. Using time management skills and test taking strategies will usually increase the score several points towards a higher score.
