« Hackers :: DISD Magnet Program Applications »Taking the SAT or the ACT is definitely a big step in a graduate’s life. Unfortunately, fear is the utmost factor to confront when preparing to choose which of the two tests an individual should take. That fear is fed by the many mistruths surrounding the test. So many people have so many different opinions concerning which is the best test to take. Obviously the best test for the individual to take is the one that best fits his/her preparation and needs. Review the paragraphs below. Perhaps this will give you more confidence in choosing the right test for you as an individual.

Neither the SAT or the ACT tests are IQ tests. Mastery of information demonstrates knowledge, not intelligence. Intelligence is something that can grow through hard work and practice. Therefore choose preparation over thoughts of IQ which are not applicable for the test. Studying increases the best chance of passing
Do practice taking both the ACT and the SAT. Your tutor will have many sources available for you to use. After a few practice tests of both the ACT and the SAT, it will become apparent which test is best for you. It will be the one that you were comfortable taking and scored the highest score. There is no need to listen to others opinions concerning which was the best for them. Taking both tests will assure you the test that is the best for you.
The two tests are different. Their format is different. Pick the one with the format that best fits your learning style. You will do better on the ACT if you are prone to test anxiety, read faster than most, and are comfortable with the more advanced math tested. SAT is for you if you are always looking for the “angle”, have a great vocabulary, and are a slow reader though you are an analytical person. Try both. See where you fit.
Great colleges will accept either the ACT or the SAT. Years ago there may have been discrepancies between the tests, but not anymore. William Fitzsimmons, dean of admissions and financial aid at Harvard, answers that worry by stating: “We accept ACT and SAT scores on an absolutely equal basis”.
Do take as many practice tests as you can. Practice, practice, practice, is the answer to passing the test chosen. Take both of the tests until you have assured yourself which is the right test for you. Then concentrate on taking the chosen one over and over until you are familiar with all the quirks and different dialogues used. Become familiar with your chosen test’s vocabulary, the method in which the questions are written, and the time allowed per test. Now is the time to ask for help. Do not hesitate to work with a tutor who has taken the test and knows the procedures for success on the test.
Both the ACT and the SAT may be taken more than once. Don’t hesitate to take it more than once. The first test may give the insight to areas that are still uncertain. These are areas that you and your tutor will know to stress. Also, remember that taking the test more than once can also raise your score.
Key word: Practice.
