« One Twin + One Twin = Autism :: One Thousand Paper Cranes »Recently you asked yourself a very important question:
Does my child need tutoring? Many reasons why your child needed tutoring passed through your mind. Exploring those reasons can bring a peace of mind to you assuring you that the correct decision was made. There are many reasons why a child may need tutoring. The child may be suffering from autism or dyslexia. Or,he/she may not be making the grades sufficient for the end of school testing, thereby, causing frustration and feelings of failure in school. Mr. Edward Gordon, president of the Imperial Consulting Corporation, reported in an October, 2011 article for The New York Times that "the majority of parents who hired a tutor to help their child with academics did it because the child was struggling, or to increase already high scores."
Follow up:
However, tutoring is not only remedial but also enhancement. Students need to be challenged in order to further develop their skills. Tutoring allows a qualified individual to instill strong thought processes, develop study skills, and strengthen the learning strategies needed in order to succeed.
In today's world, there is a most important fact. The fact: The No Child Left Behind Act requires testing students every year in reading, math, science, and social studies in the third grade through eighth grades. School funding is based on the results. Also, the fourth grade and seventh grade student scores from these exams may be used to determine whether a child gains admission to a selective public, middle, or high school. These scores may also be used to determine whether the child will be placed in vocational classes or in academic classes. In addition to these stressful facts, students are not allowed to graduate until they have passed the Exit exam.
Add to the stress of these tests on the students, the stress that is placed on the public school teacher. He/She is driven by a timeline, and the pace to finish the curriculum is unbelievably stressful. She has no choice. She can't wait for the child left in the dark to catch up with the rest. She must forge ahead and finish the curriculum that will be tested. If she doesn't meet the timeline, she may be terminated.
Now, add yet another factor. Before or by the time a student enters secondary classes, they are besieged by AP (advanced placement) classes. Admissions directors will note those AP classes when considering accepting students into their college. The more AP classes taken, the better the changes of admission to college.
A tutor can be beneficial in teaching classes that are no longer emphasized in the public schools. State tests do not emphasize the importance of spelling or grammar. Colleges and businesses do. The student may be left in a void. They may know what the word superlative means yet not know how to spell the word. Punctuation usage is not stressed by the public school; therefore, the student may not know or understand when to use commas or semicolons. Yet punctuation usage is considered fundamental!
Did you realize that middle school students today are doing what once was perceived as high school work and that high school students today are performing at the level of college courses?
By allowing your child the privilege of having tutorial services, you have deeply enriched his/her learning capabilities and success in all academic areas; test scores, Advanced Placement classes, and academic classes.
