Oct 21 | Is There An Algebra Overkill? | by John W. Myres

Reprint from Education Week | 10/14/2010

In crime novelist Steve Thayer's book The Wheat Field, a police officer pursuing a murderer seeks the assistance of a university psychology professor in profiling the assailant. In the course of their initial conversation, the professor, seeking a little background on the officer, asks him if he ever attended college. He responds by saying that, after serving during World War II as an Army Ranger, he attended for only one year because he found the classes of limited interest, and so far from reality.

Kiddingly, the officer adds: "You know, of course, that in the real world there's no such thing as algebra."

Oct 20 | Definition of a Tier 1 University

The recent publication of the U.S. New and World Report on Top Ranked Universities prompted a question to me from one of our clients about the difference between Tier 1 and Tier 2 universities. I thought I would share the information we discussed.

There are many ranking organizations which use different methods in justifying which university earns the tier 1 or tier 2 ranking. There are common factors which will be outlined below.

Identification
1.Two prominent organizations are the Center for Measuring University Performance (the Center) and the U.S. News and World Report (U.S. News). Both organizations are respected institutions, however they have differing methodologies of evaluation.
