Parents and professionals that I know are asking me questions about "Race to the Top" and what or how will it impact our schools and our kids.... This came to me in a news message today. I would like to share it with you so that you can do your research and make an informed decision on your position on this very important topic!
I do not normally post information on products, however Pilot Pen has a product that is an erasable pen which erases by friction....I have personally been using it for several months now and exclusively use it on my day timer and work notes....I have also found myself sharing the pens with friends and work associates because I cannot say enough about how great the pens are! Pilot has made the FriXon erasable aspect of this pen an awesome feature!
Summer Reading! It's all about getting kids to engage in the process. Keep them reading and moving their speed and reading level up. Check out our Timmy's Tutor site and see Timmy engaged in comic books!
"The best way to get people to think out of the box is not to create the box in the first place." Martin Cooper ~ For those of you that do not know who Martin Cooper is.... a quick couple of words..... the father of wireless phones. He certainly made an impact in our society; wouldn't you say? I loved his quote when I read it this morning and felt encourage and inspired by it. An inventor certainly would not be successful if he could not break down barriers such as Cooper demonstrated by creating phones that did not connect us to a stationary place. Image the people in his life that may have said "It can't be done!" What if a child was told "It can't be done!" don't try....give up....it is up to all of us to help children to think outside the box.
The most recent cartoon posting on the http://www.timmystutor.com website illustrates how children incorporate current events into understanding the world around them.
In this clever comic strip, Timmy has realized that his role as part of his family is not a democratic role. Parents, dad in particular was able to veto a trip to Six Flags and instead require the kids to do their yard work chores.
Visit http://www.timmystutor.com and enjoy the feel good messages that come from children learning and applying what they learn to their real life situations.
Feel free to post your suggestions for future comic strips!
Parents and educators alike are concerned about the child and their self esteem. Part of the Creative Tutors mission and vision is to support the healthy growth of every child and their self esteem. It is hard to pen down the exact events that helps one child develop a solid self esteem and the next child suffers with a low self esteem.
Self esteem is a feeling. It is not a skill that your child can develop, such as becoming a better swimmer or artist with diligent practice. A great self esteem is a necessary aspect of academic and social success; or possibly a consequence that occurs because of academic and social success. Basically, as each child achieves successes along the way their self esteem builds and grows stronger. Day by day, slow and steady...self esteem grows and blooms....and wilts and blooms again.... becoming a part of the core spirit of each child.
Careful and diligently observe the child's self esteem and it will allow the parent and educators to impact its very strength. Seeking opportunity to nurture it is a delight.
As a parent you may want to observe key aspects that will determine if your child has a low self-esteem:
* Does your child consistently make self-derogatory statements? Such as; I'm so stupid!
* Do you feel your child exhibits a pattern of learned helplessness?
* Does you child sit back and not volunteer?
* Have you observed practice perfectionism?
* Is your child overly dependent?
* Does your child demonstrate an excessive need for acceptance?
Is there a great desire to please authority figures?
* Do you find that your child has difficulty making decisions?
* Does your child exhibit low tolerance for frustration?
* Will your child become easily defensive?
* Do you see that your child has little faith in their own judgment?
* Is your child highly vulnerable to peer pressure?
It is up to parents and teachers to build a child's self-esteem. Learn more about how to develop your child's self esteem by visiting http://kidshealth.org/parent/emotions/feelings/self_esteem.html
