Jun 28 | 21st Century Classrooms

A Must Read by Kathleen Kennedy Manzo
http://www.edweek.org/dd/articles/2009/06/26/04classroomlook_necc09.h02.html

Keith T. Larick envisions classrooms with banks of wired and wireless computers, ceiling-mounted projectors, interactive whiteboards, and mobile tech-enabled work carts for teachers, all linked to allow for dynamic, multimedia presentations that inspire learning. Students’ desks would be moved out and replaced with individual workstations and group tables to foster hands-on and collaborative projects.

Why Timmy's Tutor?

“It takes a village to raise a child.” The message rings clear and true that children need many types of people in their lives as they journey on their path to adulthood; part of the village are their teachers and how they impact children in everyday life. Parents and teachers work together to coach, teach, and mentor the child through all developmental ages and stages of their life. Sometimes life feels good! Other times, life does not feel so great and that is the time you need your village the most.

Review of the book: "Fixing My Gaze" by Susan Barry

I just finished the book "Fixing my Gaze" by Susan Barry. This true story is about a neuroscientist who discovered the wonders and beauty of binocular vision at the age of 50.

Sue had strabismus as a child and while 3 surgeries managed to "straighten" her eyes she never developed binocular vision. This is actually very common among those who have had strabismus surgery. Only about 1/3 of all patients who undergo strabismus surgery develop binocular vision. Sue became a very successful neuroscientist despite her so-called disability. She really didn't think she had missed anything by not having binocular vision.

Jun 19 | Joe Scruggs Children's Music

If it wasn't "Rapunzel Got A Mohawk" waking up the space shuttle astronauts then maybe it was "Oh, By the Way" being sung to stump the band on the David Letterman Show. Perhaps it was the Psychic Singers singing "Bahamas Pajamas" on the Today Show. It could be that your child came home from school singing "Goo Goo Ga Ga". One way or another way you've probably heard Joe Scruggs' music. Taking the universal experiences that all families have and turning them into a celebration in song has made Joe's music popular with adults as well as children. READ MORE http://www.hellojoe.com/

Jun 18 | Timmy's Tutor

I am excited to share with your our new website and launch of our social network brand, Timmy's Tutor. http://www.timmystutor.com/

I had this idea. For anyone that knows me they have heard me say, “Hey, I want to create a fun comic strip series that represents the joyful experiences of learning.” I want to share stories that are uplifting. Real stories that the community of parents, teachers and students can relate to and connect with. I want to create characters that become part of the fabric that uplifts our day. And with that message those that surround me had an expression much like a question mark that asked….. Why?

Long story short; Timmy’s Tutor was born out of my genuine interest in sharing joyful learning situations with the world. I have a personal desire to leave each reader with a chuckle in their heart, a smile on their face and a sense of hope for the children that will inherit our planet.

Jun 12 | Violence among Teen Girls on the Increase

1 out of 4 violent episodes are being perpetrated by teen girls, up from just a generation ago when it was 1 girl -10 boys. As can be seen, girl violence is increasing from 1-10 and now 1out of every 4 violent episodes involves girls carrying it out. According to the Justice Department, it is not just boys any longer, violence among girls is on the rise. Schools report a similar pattern in the number of girls suspended or expelled for fighting. Around the country schools, polices and teachers are seeing a growing tendency for girls to settle disputes with their fists. They are finding themselves breaking up playground fights in which girls are going at each other at an alarming rate.
