Anyone looking to attend a small college in the US should look at private or independent colleges and universities. Private schools are funded through grants, private donations and tuition. There are more than 600 private, smaller universities and colleges located throughout the nation. Many are listed on the website of the Council of Independent Colleges. Most have enrollment of around 3000 students or less. Generally, they offer only undergraduate programs with few graduate programs. There are more opportunities for faculty and students to interact due to smaller class sizes. They may have stricter standards for admission. Examples of schools of this type include Vassar, Swarthmore or Bryn Mawr.
