Books that Teach Character

Mar 04 | Books that Teach Character

Children's Literature is a great source for teaching character and values. I wanted to share a few of my favorites for children 5-8 years old. Brave Irene (Wiliam Steig), Secret of the Peaceful Warrior (Dan Millman), A Little Princess (Frances Hodgson Burnett), and Sacajewa Wilderness Guide (Kate Jassem) are great for teaching courage. If you are wanting to teach love and service to your child try the Little House on the Prairie series (Laura Ingall Wilder), Miranda's Magic Garden (Linda Atnip),and The Giving Tree. Another vital lesson that today's children need is perserverance. Freedom Train-The Story of Harriet Tubman (Dorothy Sterling) and The Little Engine that Could help children see that the human spirit can endure many things.
I will be adding character traits and books that can help teach these over the next couple of weeks so stay tuned!

In third grade we read, Alexander's Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day. Alexander's answer to all of life's unfairness is to want to run off to Australia because he believes none of these bad things will happen there. This is a great book to use when teaching the power of a positive attitude and the power one's perspective can have on one's ability to endure struggles in daily life. I still remember that one can have a bad day, "even in Australia," whenever I find my self entertaining the urge to run away and hang out with the kangaroos for a while. And of course, even as adults, we can feel that way alot!
