Nov 12 | McKinney Family Success Due to Educational Support

As the mother of 4 boys, I invested in SAT prep for my oldest son.  That experience was not particularly successful.  He is strong in language but weak in mathematics, but the tutoring program was a large group and not customized to his individual needs and he did not feel the tutoring was worth the time.   For my second son, Monty we consulted with  Creative Tutors.  The advise was to take the SAT early and see where the needs were for him specifically.  Although he is strong in math, through out the year with his advanced math classes, we did take advantage of math tutoring.  This kept his grades in the AP math classes high.  And he was very high on the AP exams and received college credit for those classes.  This savings alone would have made the tutoring worth while.  But for Monty, what make the most difference was the assistance he received in language arts.   He is slightly dyslexic and language arts are his weakest subject.  His tutors not only prepped him for the SAT and ACT tests, but they recommended that he take them multiple times.  And after each test, they reviewed the results and concentrated on the areas that were weaknesses.  They also worked with him to write admission essays to college.  With this assistance and personal recommendations he was admitted to all of the colleges to which he applied.   My third son is severely dyslexic and is also strong in math.  Two of his teachers called me to ask what I was doing for tutoring because of the increase in his self confidence.  Overall, I could not be more pleased with my boys tutoring experience, not only in areas of their weakness but also in the areas of their strengths.

I ran across this list of 10 free things for November on the National Educators Associations website.  There are possible activities for parents and teachers as well as links to websites that can be used to help during lessons or to provide additional resources for students as well as parents.  I particularly like #2, Health and Well Being, and #9, Communication for Parents, on the list.  Check it out if you are interested.  Creative Tutors is here to help you with any of your educational needs.
